LOGBOOK

From the first hull to the water.

The log of Firmship. It grows with the build.

Last entry: 12 February 2026.

I

The first Firmship.

2008

It starts with a 42.

Firmship begins when the 42 is drawn. A workboat shape in steel, with nothing on it that does not earn its place. The hull is by naval architect Willem Nieland.

July 2009

The prototype.

A bare hull at a jetty, marked Prototype. No paint, no interior. Only the line.

The bow of the dark prototype hull at its berth, with mooring lines running down to the quay
Two steel bollards with a coiled grey mooring line, the harbour behind
The finished white ship on timber supports in a museum hall, seen from the side

This ship belongs in a museum.

October 2010

Finished.

The 42 is complete. A steel hull, an interior by Studio Job, and a wheel with a skull at its centre.

A ship's wheel with turned wooden spokes and a white hub bearing a skull and crossbones

February 2011

The world looks.

The 42 is shown to the press. Within months it is in print from London to Tokyo.

2012 to 2020

Years on the water.

The first Firmship went sailing. We learned what a ship like this should be.

A single dark ship far out on open water under a pale sky, the shore a thin line of trees

II

The fifty-five.

May 2023

A larger ship.

The first renders of a 55-foot Firmship. The shape will change. The idea will not.
